Within the past year, AWS unveiled what is arguably one of the best programs they have ever offered to non-technical professionals in the AWS Partner Network (APN): the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification. The program, which is especially valuable for those in sales or marketing roles, doesn’t offer any high-tech products or services for selling or marketing AWS. Instead, it offers a learning path and a certification that is intended to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively demonstrate an overall understanding of the AWS Cloud.
I recently embarked on the journey to get my own certification as an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner. I found the training classes and study material to be worthy of recommendation to any sales or marketing professional in this space. Below is a breakdown of how various components are weighted on the final exam. Learn more by downloading this exam guide.
The recommended learning path includes the AWS Business Essentials class, which discusses value propositions for the cloud and various services, pricing structure, and available support; as well as the AWS Technical Essentials class, which discusses setting up an EC2 instance, securing your VPN, and selecting appropriate hardware and services for different purposes. Candidates will need to demonstrate an understanding of IT services and their uses in the AWS Cloud platform. These are both full-day classes offered by third parties. The material taught in these classes provides invaluable knowledge for sales and marketing professionals who wish to convey the value of the AWS cloud overall and the various services on AWS to their prospects and clients.
AWS recommends that candidates have at least six months of experience with the AWS Cloud in any role, including technical, managerial, sales, purchasing, or financial before taking the exam. This will ensure that you have a level of familiarity with the subject matter. A great place to start your exam preparation is with the free, online class offered by AWS: AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials. This class defines the basic global infrastructure of AWS, key services, and the basics of deploying and operating in the cloud. This is an essential tool for sales and marketing professionals.
AWS also recommends that students review the white papers below in preparation for the exam:
While you may begin this journey simply to achieve a certification, you will likely end it with a thorough understanding of how the AWS Cloud works including the business, technical, security, billing, and pricing aspects. Earning the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification is something that will certainly help me on a daily basis in my role as Partner Marketing Manager.
