Coalfire to Speak at Black Hat Europe on Data Breaches
Manchester, UK – Oct. 20, 2017 – Coalfire, a trusted provider of independent, comprehensive cybersecurity advisory services, announced today its participation in the Black Hat Europe cybersecurity conference in London, from December 4-7, 2017.
Black Hat events are the leading global information security conferences, and each year provide the world’s cyber community with training on the very latest in information security risks, research and trends.
Andy Barratt, Coalfire’s managing principal for financial services and payment solutions, will join a select group of other industry leaders and law enforcers in a panel discussion on Tuesday, December 5, entitled “Are Criminals Really Profiting from Your Stolen Data?” on how cybercriminals make money from data breaches.
Specifically, he will discuss how firms can tackle the persistent threat posed by data breaches, whereby instead of trying to extort money from victims, cybercriminals seek to use their access into business’s networks to carry out low level frauds that avoid detection over long periods of time.
Andy said: “The crisis many businesses worry about, and therefore need to prepare for, is when they know they have been the victim of a data breach and are extorted by the criminals who have broken into their systems.
“Large scale breaches allow criminals to almost endlessly package and repackage the data they have stolen, selling each different selection of information on the black market. But sometimes the greater risk lies in the so-called ‘low and slow’ frauds, where a criminal gains access to their victim’s network and spends months, sometimes years, slowly defrauding them out of significant sums of money.
“Unless businesses are permanently improving their vigilance and creating ever-more effective thresholds to raise the alarm, this persistent threat can be far more dangerous than a single, high-value digital heist.”
Black Hat Europe takes place at ExCel London, UK, from Monday, December 4 to Thursday, December 7, 2017. The discussion takes place in the South Gallery Rooms at the Excel Centre at 10:50 on Tuesday, December 5.
